Accessory basics for successful pumping

Does the accessory thing make your head spin?  Let's go through them category by category to help you decide what will work best for you. There are certain accessories you will definitely want to have on hand and others that are more in the optional category.

Must haves

Breast Pads

Most women experience some milk leakage and find it comfortable and reassuring to use some type of breast pad. If you are in a pinch you can take a hankie or cut up a diaper and put it inside your bra but it is really nice to have a contoured pad, and one that is absorbent.  You definitely want a number of these on hand. If you are into natural fibers and not into disposable goods go with the washables.  You might want to mix and match the cotton and the disposable so you have all options available.

Cotton Pads are more breathable, softer on the skin and washable. We carry:

  • The Medela 100% Cotton Pads
  • Ameda Contoured Reusable Pads

Washable Lace Pads are a little more shapely, attractive and also reusable.  Not all cottone if natural fiber is your thing. We carry:

  • Medela Washable Lace Pads

Disposable Pads are convenient, easy to use but may be more irritating to sensitive skin and if you're not into things disposable you might not prefer them. We carry:

  • Medela Disposable Pads
  • Ameda Disposable Pads

We also carry Lilypadz, the latest innovation in pads. Lilypadz are a totally new concept in breast pads. A washable, reusable clear silicone patch that covers the nipple, applying pressure so that milk doesn't even leak. Rather than absorbing excess milk, it's more like pressing on the nipple with your thumb to stop milk flow. You can wear these without a bra and use over and over.

Nipple Care

Cream

You definitely want some soothing lanolin nipple cream on hand. If your nipples are tender or irritated, it's the best. It can be used between feedings, no need to wash off before putting your baby to breast. Also great for chapped lips and skin.

HEALTH ALERT: Do not use if you are allergic to wool.  Not a substitute for medical advice. If nipple soreness, irritation, bleeding or cracking persists, you will need to seek medical help.

We carry:

  • Medela Purelan
  • Ameda Lansinoh

•  Ameda ComfortGel Hydrogel Pads

Breastmilk Storage Containers

You're going to need containers to store all that milk you'll be pumping! You can choose between bottles or storage bags...or mix and match. If you are using bottles, you'll want at least 4-6, four or five oz bottles on hand to get started. Buy more or less.depending on how often you'll be pumping and washing. If you are pumping and storing in bags, stock up and get the bigger package.
