Cleaning my pump

How often does a pump and pumping kit need to be cleaned? Make sure you clean the outside of your pump after each use.  A clean damp rag is great for the outside of the pump.  Before using the kit., sterilize all parts. Read manufacturers directions carfeully before boiling kit parts as some are not boilable.  You don't need to sterilize with each use, but need to wash thoroughly  with hot soapy water or the equivalent. Often moms who are pumping full time will buy an extra kit so if they can't wash the kit right away, they have more flexibility.  Many parts are dishwasher safe.  See below and check manufacturers instructions before washing pump.

Medela pump kits are dishwasher safe and boilable for sterilization. Wash the small pieces- valves and membranes in a small container in the sink in hot soapy water.  Tubes do not need to be washed. Wipe down outside of pump after each use. Make sure to follow hygiene instructions for whichever pump you purchase.

Ameda pump kits are dishwasher safe and boilable for sterilization. Wash the small pieces- valves, diaphragms, tubing adapter and tubing cap in a small container in the sink in hot soapy water.  Tubes do not need to be washed. Wipe down outside of pump after each use. Make sure to follow hygiene instructions for whichever pump you purchase.

The Avent Isis pump and bottles are dishwasher safe and boilable for sterilization. Bottles may become discolored in dishwasher from any leftover food that may be on other dishware.

The Whisper Wear pump parts that come in contact with milk can be washed by hand with warm soapy water. Rinse and let air dry

The Whittlestone Pump kits are dishwasher safe and boilable for sterilization. However these cleaning methods will reduce product life. It is always recommended to hand wash all plastic and silicone parts with mild soap for longer life.

BE AWARE: Do not ever wash the motor unit of any breast pump. You can wipe down the outside of the pump with a clean rag.
