Collecting Milk

Now that you've chosen your pump, here comes the next big question...what do I use for collecting and storing  all that milk?   The bottle/bag discussion can sound complicated, so  I'm going to try and make this as simple as I can for you.  Here are the options for how you can go about collecting and storing milk:

  • You can pump directly into a collection and storage bag, store in a bag, transfer into a standard bottle and feed from a standard bottle
  • You can pump directly into a collection and storage bag, store in a bag, transfer into an Avent bottle and feed from an Avent bottle
  • You can pump directly into a standard bottle, store in a standard bottle and feed from a standard bottle
  • You can pump directly into a standard bottle, store in a standard bottle, transfer into an Avent bottle and feed from an Avent bottle
  • You can pump directly into an Avent bottle ( using Isis pump or using conversion kit with other pumps), store in an Avent bottle and feed from an Avent bottle

Trust me, once you have decided what pump and which feeding system you will be using, you will get organized and it will all become second nature.

You can collect and store milk in:

  • A bottle (either standard or wide mouthed)
  • A collection and storage bag

If  you use standard bottles you can either use:

  • Medela Breastmilk and Storage Set- insulated cooler with four 5 oz. polycarbonate bottles with orthodontic nipples, storage lids and caps
  • Ameda Cool 'n Carry Tote- insulated cooler bag with 3 cooling elements and six 4 oz polycarbonate bottles with caps. Nipples not included.
  • Whittlestone Milk Collection Bottles- four 5.5 oz milk collection and storage bottles with caps. Nipples not included.

If you use wide mouth bottles you will want to use:

  • Avent Reusable Bottles- 4 oz or 9oz bottles come in packs of three

INFO TIP: If you choose to pump directly into a bottle any standard bottle will fit into all of the Medela and Ameda breast pumps with the exception of the wide mouthed Avent bottle. It requires an Avent conversion kit so that the mouth of the bottle will fit into the body of the pump.   This conversion kit is not required with the Avent Isis hand pump.

If you decide to pump directly into storage bags you can use either:

  • Medela CFS Storage Bags
  • Ameda Mothers Milk Freezer Bags

Some moms like this disposable option especially if they are really on the go.  If however you are the person who hates the idea of throwing away yet one more plastic bag, this won't be for you. For more info about bottles and nipples, go to: Choosing a bottle and nipple.

INFO TIP: If you choose to pump directly into a collection and storage bag, any bag will fit all of the Medela and Ameda breast pumps.  Whittlestone, does not work with storage bags and the Whisper Wear pump has its own custom bags.
